Food supplements: how to choose them

Are we sure that food supplements are always good for us?

The correct answer is: it dependsUsing supplements is good, or better, it works if it is "customized", in respect to age, habits, eating habits, lifestyle, needs, season and other parameters.

Food supplements can interact with other substances, in particular, medications; for this reason it is always advisable to obtain the essential nutrients through food.

Where there are deficiencies supplements should be taken under the counsel of one's GP or Nutritionist.
Healthy Food Guide has published a small list of the most popular food supplements, to which we have decided to add some extra indications in order to help you choose well!

#Omega3 - Fish oil

Good for the brain, heart, gut and vision. We can stock up by eating good fish, including herring, salmon, sardines, tuna ... 100 grams of salmon, for example contain 3,000 mg of Omega 3.

Supplements are not recommended when: there are cardiovascular issues, arthritis, asthma, mood disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or if you are allergic to fish or other foods rich in Omega 3.

For healthy individuals the suggested quantity is: 160 mg for men and 90 mg for women.

#Calcium

Gives strength and structure to bones and helps muscular contractions.
It is obtained naturally from milk and dairy products. Two cups of cow milk - or soy enriched with calcium - and 200 grams of yogurt guarantee an intake of 1,000 mg of calcium.

The supplements are indicated when: there are food intolerances to milk and its derivatives, strictly under professional advice, to treat or prevent kidney stones, fractures, osteoporosis.
They are not recommended if one obtains enough calcium through the diet.

For healthy individuals the suggested quantity is: 1,300 mg for adolescents and men over 70 years of age; 1,300 mg for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or women in menopause.

#Probiotics

First of all they are good for the gut - and not only - an organ involved in several important physiological functions, which contributes to the health of the immune system and to a healthy connection with the brain.

Probiotics have different indications depending on their composition.
In general, they act with a positive effect on the entire intestinal environment, and - depending on the live and active microorganisms that compose them - carry out different functions.

An extra reason to ask for medical advice is to find the most efficient remedy for your specific case. In the meantime,  know that the word probiotic means “pro vita” (life enhancing) from the Greek pro bios.
